WSPC's Presbyterian Women (PW)

The Presbyterian Women’s group at Witherspoon Street Presbyterian Church is an active ministry that nurtures faith, fellowship, and service within the congregation and the surrounding community. Throughout the year, the group organizes programs that celebrate women’s leadership and support outreach efforts. One highlight is Gifts of Women Sunday, a special worship service that honors the legacy of educator and missionary Betsey Stockton by presenting the Betsey Stockton Award to women who have enriched the life of the church and community. The group also hosts fellowship events such as the Palm Sunday Tea, an annual gathering that brings members and friends together for conversation, encouragement, and support of ministry initiatives. In addition, Presbyterian Women lead seasonal service projects, including the church’s Sleepwear Drive for Younity, collecting items during the Advent season to assist women and families in need. Through worship celebrations, community gatherings, and outreach ministries, the Presbyterian Women continue a longstanding tradition of leadership, hospitality, and service at Witherspoon Street Presbyterian Church.

Some WSPC's PW History

Get to know more about why our history makes us different.

A central feature of this ministry is the presentation of the Betsey Stockton Award, named in honor of Betsey Stockton, a pioneering African American educator and missionary whose life of faith and service left a lasting impact on the Princeton community. The award recognizes women who embody Stockton’s legacy by enriching the church's spiritual life and contributing to the well-being of the wider community. By lifting up contemporary leaders through this recognition, Presbyterian Women connect the church’s present ministry with a historic tradition of women whose faith inspired education, advocacy, and community transformation.
The work of Presbyterian Women also reflects the enduring influence of leaders such as Susie Waxwood, a longtime member of Witherspoon who was ordained as an elder and served as president of the church’s Women’s Association. Waxwood’s leadership extended beyond the congregation—she helped establish the Princeton Crisis Ministry and represented New Jersey at the White House Conference on Aging—demonstrating how faith can inspire meaningful community service. Together, the ongoing ministry of Presbyterian Women, the Betsey Stockton Award, and the legacy of leaders like Susie Waxwood highlight Witherspoon Street Presbyterian Church’s historic role as a center of African American faith, leadership, and community advocacy in Princeton.
